The book documents Markus Heinsdorff’s long engagement with mobile, lightweight and temporary architecture. A particular focus lies on the mobile art and exhibition structures for the Federal Republic of Germany that Markus Heinsdorff developed for the cultural projects “Deutschland und China – Gemeinsam in Bewegung” (2007–2010) and “Deutschland und Indien 2011–2012”. While bamboo was the central construction material in China, numerous pavilions with lightweight membrane structures were built in India. Drawing on these and other international projects, the book documents the interplay of art, architecture, construction and material research. In doing so, it combines traditional building methods with innovative techniques and shows possibilities for resource-saving, flexible and mobile building.

(Book excerpt)

Portable, robust, quick to assemble and dismantle, easy to repair and recycle, and suitable for use in different climate regions – these were the requirements for the pavilions that Markus Heinsdorff designed for the presentation of Germany in India 2011–13 (steel and membrane) and the presentation of Germany in China 2007–10 (bamboo and membrane).

The textile structures served as mobile exhibition, conference, concert and event spaces and toured through a total of ten megacities. As object-like structures, they simultaneously embodied the “building and urbanisation themes” of the events. The highly innovative construction of the pavilions, developed mainly in collaboration with the engineers schlaich, bergermann und partner, together with the novel fabric materials and their outstanding aesthetic quality, make these multifunctional lightweight structures innovative prototypes of a new generation of textile building. “mobile spaces” presents the different pavilion types in photographs and plans, as well as further experiments with universities and engineers on “environmental membranes” and structural engineering in extreme lightweight construction.
