Nature and space in relation to climate, the environment, and social issues are the themes of installation artist Markus Heinsdorff (1954), who incorporates architecture and photography into his work. Projects, installations, exhibitions, and teaching activities have taken place in various countries and cultures, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zanzibar, China (*8), Taiwan, India (5), Thailand (3), Indonesia, Java and Bali (3), Vietnam (2), Tunisia (3), the USA, Ecuador, Brazil (2), Peru, Venezuela, Germany (16), Austria (2), the Netherlands, France (2), Italy (5), Hungary (2), and England. In most countries, Heinsdorff develops projects for exhibition sites using local materials. This also applies to the diverse pavilion constructions realised as mobile architecture and art buildings for Germany’s multi-year presentation in China (20 buildings) and in India (16 buildings), which toured for several years through eleven megacities with millions of visitors – including the German-Chinese House at the centre of the World Expo in Shanghai, a two-storey bamboo structure that now stands in the museum quarter of Hangzhou. For his work and his role in mediating between cultures, he received the **Federal Cross of Merit. (*cities, places)
