2025 (40) “Designing Energy” – experimental workshop with Prof. Andreas Zeiselmair, Professor of Digital Energy Transition at the university, and 12 students. Development of ideas for shaping the energy transition, supply, infrastructure, and cool spaces. Accompanied by questions of attractiveness, acceptance, and acceleration of the transformation. seven-day workshop with Exhibition I at the Art + Architecture Academy for Climate, Environment and Social Affairs, Raitenhaslach Monastery, Exhibition II at Terminal 2, Munich Airport – with a total five-month run in 2025–2026. 

Arusha Technical College – Tanzania

2023 (39) Workshop on low-cost construction methods with Munich architect Benedikt Hartl and 16 students at Arusha Technical College. Construction of a prototype from plastic waste and steel tubing on the college grounds. (Concept/design MH.) Aim of the workshop: development of the simplest, most cost-effective construction methods incorporating recycling, environmental protection, and sustainability. Project supervision: Prof. Humuri K. Haymale. The realised “Recycling Haus” serves, at 20 m², as a laboratory for the mobile water teaching kit, a collaborative project between Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, initiated by Christoph Rapp (hydromechanics), and Arusha Technical College.

Vietnamese-German University (VGU) – Ben Cat City, Vietnam

2023 (38) “Out of Waste and Water”. Over the course of the eight-day workshop, 72 students from several departments were introduced to the theme “Recycling, Environment, Materials and Cycles” under the direction of the VGU. Using seven models involving recycled plastic, recycled cardboard, and microplastics in water, different aspects of sustainable use, reuse and processing, and construction and design possibilities were examined, and various exhibits on these themes were built. The exhibits were shown at the university for several weeks.

Hochschule Kaiserslautern – University of Applied Sciences – Germany

2023/24 (37) Workshop with the Chair of Architecture and Structural Design of Prof. Brigitte Al Bosta and Prof. Carina Neff at the university, architect Lorena Nolte, and 60 students on “Recycling plus DesignBuild”. Themes of the two-day workshop on “Architecture, Environment, Social Affairs” included recycling possibilities, including plastic from the sea, new construction methods for bamboo/wood as woven structures, and construction methods for, among other projects, the planned construction of a community centre by the university in the Philippines.

Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) – Germany

2019 (36) Interdisciplinary master’s studio with 50 students under the title “OUT OF WASTE”. Using waste and regional building materials, simple, variable, and expandable construction systems were to be developed, enabling people in poor regions of the world to build habitable spatial units without specialised knowledge and with few tools. The systems are intended to be as durable, sustainable, and cost-effective as possible. Direction and concept: MH., in collaboration with Studio AD Architektur, Prof. Silke Langenberg, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Prof. Christian Schuler, and the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship, Prof. Klaus Sailer.

Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Germany

2018 (35) TUM chair team project: workshop and semester programme for “New Materials” at the Faculty of Architecture on the theme of additive manufacturing – secondary use and recycling at the Chair of Building Construction and Materials Science EBB and the Low-Cost-Lab with Prof. Florian Musso, architect Sophie Reiner, and architect Tobias Kogelnig.

Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Germany

2016 (34) “Space Ship”: prototype for a floatable low-cost shelter, exhibited for several months at the Architekturmuseum der TUM at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich under the title “Space Ship”, and theme/title of a TUM semester workshop “Einfach Bauen”. In collaboration with the Chair of Building Construction and Materials Science at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Prof. Florian Musso, and the Low-Cost-Lab, together with architects Stefan Giers, Lavinia Herzog, and Ursula Schürmann.

Hello Wood – International Education Platform and Design Studio – Csórompuszta, Hungary

2016 (33) “Observatorium”, workshop and building project. Nine architecture students from various countries developed an 8.5 m high tower made of 7 × 7 cm square beams under the direction of MH. and based on his design concept The construction was realised at the Hello Wood Festival in Csórompuszta, Hungary, in a one-week summer school. In collaboration with Hello Wood, Budapest. Video documentation.

Technical University of Darmstadt – Germany

2016 (32) “Working with Heinsdorff”, as part of the seminar of the same name, a group of architecture students examined various constructions made of corrugated cardboard. The tower titled “Paper Box” was realised together with the students as a contribution to the theme “Hermitage” for the art biennial Kunsteiland in Rotterdam (design, concept MH.). In cooperation with TU Darmstadt and preceded by a workshop there, Department of Sculptural Design under the direction of Fabian Luttropp. Erected at the art biennial Kunsteiland, Hermitage, Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Ardhi University – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

2016 (31) Development of water filling stations with Prof. Richard Moses Besha, Faculty of Architecture at Ardhi University, Tanzania, and ZAWA Water Authority Zanzibar, for 10 students of engineering and architecture, with an excursion to the wind-water tower (concept, realisation MH.) in Michamvi and explanations on the use of the principle of Persian and Arabian wind-catching towers and their present-day applications in architecture and objects. In collaboration with Verein zur Förderung des internationalen Wissensaustauschs e. V. Knowledge Exchange.

Karume Institute of Science and Technology – Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania

2014 (30) “Construction with Local Materials and Recycling” and “Bamboo Construction”, workshops on the themes of sustainable building and design ideas in collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering at Karume Institute, with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and the Association for the Promotion of International Knowledge Exchange e. V., Munich.

DeTao Masters Academy – Shanghai, China

2014 (29) Five-day workshop “Bamboo Buildings – From Idea to Realization”, (Modern Bamboo Architecture: sustainable, environmentally friendly and high-tech). Planning of projects with materials from the region. 22 participants from architecture and engineering, including students from various universities in Shanghai (direction MH.) at DeTao Group Masters Academy, Center of Urban Construction & Sustainable Development.

Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Bavarian Chamber of Architects – Germany

2013 (28) “Falthaus”, realisation of a mobile, foldable, and experimental spatial object based on the idea of “einfachst Bauen” for the exhibition at Haus der Architektur of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects, with concept, design, and work by MH. Realisation and workshop in collaboration with the Chair of Design and Timber Construction at TUM, chair of Prof. Kaufmann, under the direction of architects Stefan Krötsch, Mathias Kestel, Christian Schühle.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology – Cape Town, South Africa

2013 (27) “Upcycling House” made of metal profiles and gabions (wire baskets) filled with recyclable materials from the surrounding area, built in Cape Town. The structure is both an object and a residential building with passive climate design. Project organisation Eva Ploder, Munich, in collaboration with Cape Peninsula University of Technology (concept MH.). Presented in Maboneng - “township arts experience”. Supported by the Free State of Bavaria.

Auroville Earth Institute, Hindustan University, among others – Chennai, India

2013 (26) “Low-Cost-Houses”, development of experimental, simple structures in different climate regions, followed by an exhibition at Hindustan University. A workshop project in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai, Earth Institute Auroville, Hindustan University, Faculty of Architecture, Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Detmolder Schule für Architektur und Innenarchitektur, with students and participants of the institutions.

MAEER’s MIT Institute of Design – Pune, Maharashtra, India

2013 (25) “D-lane” Urban Art Project, creation of image and text portraits through interviews with residents of a 1,200 m long street in Pune (concept MH.) in collaboration with MAEER’s MIT Institute of Design. Followed by a 10-day open-air exhibition of the portraits at the “Indo German Urban Mela” with several tens of thousands of visitors on the occasion of the presentation Germany in India under the title “D-lane – StadtRäume – City Spaces”.

Technical University of Munich (TUM) and University of São Paulo (USP) – Brazil

2012 (24) The workshop examined the catastrophic water situation for residents around the Guarapiranga reservoir in São Paulo. A project in cooperation with the TUM Hydromechanics Laboratory under the direction of Christoph Rapp, with five students and staff members and with the support of Universidade de São Paulo (USP). This resulted in 10 image and text portraits with the residents (concept, realisation MH.), which were exhibited for several weeks for the first time at Club Trans Atlantico, São Paulo, in the exhibition “About Water”.

2011 (23) “MH – Mobile Space – Germany and India 2012–2013”: “Urbanization or Migration: The Role of Culture in Indian and German Transitional Medium-Sized Cities”, workshop under the direction of Prof. Martin Roth, General Director.

National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute – Nantou, Taiwan

2011 (22) National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute. Bamboo workshop on the theme of chairs, “Chairs for the 100th Anniversary of Taiwan” with 24 Taiwanese designers in collaboration with Boisbuchet, Vitra, and Xue Xue Institute Taipei, exhibition of the exhibits at Xue Xue White Gallery in Taipei.

Hansgrohe Academy – Schiltach, Germany

2011 (21) Hansgrohe Water Symposium, “Shaping Water”, creation of a water portrait as a video and water-sound piece with 8 participants in the Black Forest.

Silpakorn University – Bangkok, Thailand

2009 (20) Construction of the “European Dome” on the occasion of “Green Days”, organised by the European Union Green Days. Lecture and bamboo dome construction as a one-week workshop with 9 students of the Faculty of Architecture. A pentagonal, twisted tower made of bamboo poles was realised (concept, design MH.). Diameter 4.70 m, height 7 m, connected with ropes – the object installation remained in place for several weeks at Central World Plaza.

Huazhong University of Science and Technology – Wuhan, China

2009 (19) Workshop with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, chair of Prof. Tan Gangyi, under the title “Recycling Art”. 30 students developed design and art objects from recycled materials over 7 days, largely sourced from the DuC bamboo pavilions. The works were shown as “Recycling Festival” on the university campus and along the German-Chinese Promenade (DuC) in exhibitions together with workshop results from Lu Xun Academy, chair of Environmental Art, Shenyang, Hubei Province.

Domaine de Boisbuchet – Lessac, France

2009 (18) “New Forms with Bamboo – Object, Design, Sustainability”, in cooperation with Vitra Design Museum and Centre Georges Pompidou (CIRECA). Boisbuchet has been an international summer academy since 1996. Workshop with 23 students and participants from various countries at Domaine de Boisbuchet, Lessac, Poitou-Charentes region.

2009 (17) Recycling Workshop and installation at Lu Xun Gallery and glass pavilion in Zhongshan Park, “Art and Design from Recycled Materials”, summer semester with 9 students from Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT), Prof. Ingrid Schegk, landscape architecture, and 9 students from Lu Xun Academy, Prof. Ma, Faculty of Environmental Art, Liaoning Province.

Chongqing University – China

2008 (16) Faculty of Architecture, Prof. Wang Xuesong, “Building with Bamboo”, summer semester. Together with 19 students, ideas for modern bamboo buildings were developed. Models, plans, and 1:1 detail structures were built as mock-ups on the open grounds of the campus.

Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences – Germany

2008 (15) Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Prof. Ingrid Schegk, under the title “Dynamic Construction – Skeleton Structures”, a bamboo design workshop in the summer semester with 25 students (graduating class) with models, plans, drawings, and mock-ups.

Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Germany

2008 (14) Master's programme at the Chair of Climate Design of Prof. Gerhard Hausladen under the title “Bamboo Construction & Renewable Energy”, development of a climate pavilion for the State of Bavaria and its presentation in China. Direction and collaboration with architect Elisabeth Endres, architect Daniel Santucci. The results were exhibited in a realised climate pavilion (design, concept MH.) along the promenade of “Deutschland und China gemeinsam in Bewegung” (DuC) in Guangzhou. The “DuC-Promenaden” of the multi-year presentation of Germany in China (pavilion and plaza designs MH.) had several tens of thousands of visitors at each of the five stops on its tour.

Southeast University (SEU), School of Architecture – Nanjing, China

2008 (13) Bamboo pavilion workshop at the School of Architecture (summer semester) under the title “Mobile Architecture and Art”, with 19 students from the chairs of landscape design and urban planning. Ideas for modern bamboo buildings were realised using scale models and mock-ups on the university campus (concept, direction M. Heinsdorff).

Southeast University (SEU), School of Architecture – Nanjing, China

2008 (12) School of Architecture. Workshop “Bamboo – Art and Architecture” (winter semester), 30 students in their 3rd and 4th year of study and 20 guest students from the Institute of Art and Design. Based on the students' designs, models and structures made of bamboo were realised on the university grounds.

Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Germany

2007 (11) Chair of Structural Design and Membrane Structures, Prof. Rainer Barthel, “Exhibition Pavilion for Nanjing”, summer semester with 20 students. Exhibition of the designs at TUM and at three stops of Germany's presentation tour in China (DuC).

Chiang Mai University – Thailand

2007 (10) Faculty of Architecture, “Tree House”, construction of a spatial object as a treehouse. Executed as an elliptical woven structure at a height of 10 m, mounted on a large rubber tree. 10-day workshop project with 80 students of the CMU Faculty of Architecture, supported by the German Embassy in Bangkok and Projektwerkstatt Berlin. The object “Tree House” was built on the university campus, transported 2 km to the installation site, lifted onto the treetop with a crane, and installed there with access via ladders.

University in Hanoi – Vietnam

2007 (09) Goethe-Institut in cooperation with a university in Hanoi, Faculty of Architecture, under the title “Experience Bamboo” with 10 students. Models, plans, and sketches were developed, with an excursion to a workshop for the traditional production of bamboo houses and bamboo furniture.

Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) – Bandung, Indonesia

2007 (08) Workshop at the technical university under the title “Space and Object: New Forms in Bamboo”. Winter semester with 35 students of the ITB Faculty of Architecture in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Bandung and Jakarta. Models, drawings, and designs were produced. Followed by a 10-day exhibition and discussion forum at the art gallery Selasar Sunaryo.

Prem Tinsulanonda International School – Mae Rim, Thailand

2006 (07) Workshop “Bamboo Installation”, 27 students/participants produced art objects and models for bamboo structures over 3 days.

Chiang Mai University – Thailand

2005 (06) Faculty of Fine Arts, chair of Prof. Udom Chimpukdee (Visual Arts). Workshop and raft excursion on and over the “Mae Ping River”. Project with the support of the UNESCO Aschberg Bursary (concept, direction MH.). 15 winter semester students produced art installations, images, and objects on the theme “Life on the River”. Multi-week presentation at the CMU annual exhibition in the university's Exhibition Hall with a 100 km aerial portrait of the river (“Mae Ping River”).

Chiang Mai University – Thailand

2005 (05) “Bamboo – Space and Object”, Faculty of Architecture, winter semester, 29 students produced constructions and objects made of bamboo over 10 days. With the support of the UNESCO Aschberg Bursary (direction MH. and staff of the chair).

University of Innsbruck – Austria

2000 (04) “Bamboo Material”, construction and building workshop on bamboo with the Faculty of Architecture, Prof. Eda Schaur, and summer semester students. Development of their own ideas and concepts. Production of drawings, models, plans. Also, construction of a 4 m spherical community installation made of bamboo poles and steel cables on the university campus. (Eda Schaur co-author with Frei Otto – IL 31 Bambus – Bauen mit pflanzlichen Stäben, Institut für Leichtbau Stuttgart).

Deutscher Werkbund Bayern – Munich, Germany

1998/99 (03) Direction of the workshop project group “Art in Public Space” with several excursions into the underground of the city with Stadtwerke München and Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV) (subway). From the workshop emerged the multi-week project “Untergrundspiele” – an installation in the Wettersteinplatz subway level in an underground hall with 1,300 m² of space (concept, realisation MH.).

Zhejiang Provincial Museum – Hangzhou, China

1998 (02) Excursion and exhibition “Windows: Marco Polo’s Dream” under the direction of Elmar Zorn, freelance curator, Prof. Jochen Boberg, director of the Senate Department for Museum Services Berlin, and Prof. Marco de Michelis, Gropius Chair at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The exhibition travelled from Hangzhou to Venice, Berlin, Linz, and New York.

Villa Pacieri – Canneto, Lazio, Italy

1980–1989 (01) Summer School – workshops at Villa Pacieri (Via Salaria km 43 before Rome) and the Munich studio, 9 years in Italy, 4 years in Germany, direction and teaching for “Goldsmithing and Creative Design”. A total of 48 workshops with over 450 participants – in collaboration, among others, with the renowned goldsmiths and silversmiths Ulrike Bahrs and Gerd Rothmann (Munich). Villa Pacieri is an estate more than 400 years old with an agricultural operation for olive oil, wine, and sheep farming on 20 hectares, and the workshop centre in the main building.
