design with nature – die Bambusbauten / the bamboo architecture – design with nature
Bamboo has been a central material in Markus Heinsdorff’s art and building projects since the late 1990s. In numerous walk-in installations and structures, he combines the traditional natural building material with innovative construction and connection techniques. A high point of this development was the German-Chinese House at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, a two-storey bamboo-membrane pavilion. The book “Bambus – Bauen mit pflanzlichen Stäben” documents design, artistic work and innovative building techniques and became an internationally recognised standard work on building with bamboo. Projects such as Skyplace and the Tree House further demonstrate his ongoing engagement with natural materials, architecture and sustainable building.
die bambusbauten
Installation artist Markus Heinsdorff has engaged with the traditional building material bamboo in his structures since 1997. The main focus of the book is on the German-Chinese House at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, which he designed.
From May to October 2010, the World Expo under the motto “Better City, Better Life” takes place in the metropolis on the Yangtze. The German-Chinese House – the only binational building at the Expo – was developed by Markus Heinsdorff. The innovative two-storey bamboo-membrane structure, dedicated to sustainable urbanisation, represents the event series “Deutschland und China gemeinsam in Bewegung” and consists largely of natural bamboo tubes and bamboo laminates.
The building was made possible by the development of new bamboo joining and processing techniques. For the first time, this also made it possible to obtain a permit for a bamboo structure in China.
The environmentally friendly high-tech pavilion serves as an art and exhibition space.
The volume documents in detail, in images and text, the planning and realisation of the pavilion and shows the ideology behind its architecture. Further contributions address both the raw material bamboo in general and architecture and design using bamboo. A dedicated chapter covers Markus Heinsdorff’s other art structures and walk-in installations. Among others, the book shows: Skyplace, an airship built in Bali, a treehouse in the canopy of a rainforest tree, and a self-regenerating dome, both in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Prominent authors contributed texts: the head of the Goethe-Institut China, Michael Kahn-Ackermann, the cultural journalist Gottfried Knapp, the professor of wood biology Walter Liese, and the director of the Vitra Design Museum.
